Proposals & Grants

Community Impact Grants
The Notre Dame Center for Social Concerns seeks to advance its mission by awarding Community Impact Grants to Notre Dame faculty, students, staff, and community partners for community-engaged research, teaching, and learning that enact the values of Catholic social tradition. Successful grant proposals show collaboration among campus and community partners and advance academic community engagement with an aim toward social justice impact.

The center highly encourages projects that align with its special interests for the 2020–21 academic year, all of which can address issues related to or impact by COVID-19 as well:
  • Economic equity/poverty/just wage
  • Racial justice
  • Environmental justice
  • Public health (especially mental health and homelessness)
Connections to our 2020–21 Catholic social tradition theme, “Justice in the World," are also prioritized.

Due to COVID challenges, there will be only one proposal timeline and proposals are due by 4:30 p.m. Oct. 26. Applicants may request grants up to $15,000.

For more information or to apply go here.

COVID Impact Grant
The Sorenson Impact Foundation (SIF) is inviting potential grant recipients to propose solutions that can contribute to a more equitable and resilient recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic and resulting economic crisis. SIF is specifically targeting solutions that enable recovery through developing and growing businesses in the recipient’s own community to equitably rebuild its emergence from the current social, health and economic crisis. The RFP submission deadline is August 30. Please see the Sorenson Impact Foundation Request for Proposal for more information.

The Center highly encourages projects this year that touch on: economic equity/poverty/just wage; educational equity; criminal justice; environmental justice. Connections to the 2019–20 Catholic social tradition theme, “Act Justly," addressing racism, are also prioritized.

Study Abroad Proposal Process
Notre Dame faculty are invited to propose and plan a faculty-led credit-bearing overseas academic program with the assistance of NDI. The program should be 8 weeks or less with a maximum of two 3-credit courses. The focus of this proposal process is to help plan and implement selected and approved programs. Faculty who lead credit-bearing programs independent of NDI are strongly encouraged to consult with NDI for health and safety guidelines, and to consider services NDI can provide. An abstract is due June 15, the year prior to the proposed program’s launch. More information can be found here.

INTERNATIONAL RESEARCH TRAVEL GRANT

The goal of the program is to act as a catalyst for international research collaborations by funding travel for individuals or groups exploring long-term research collaborations. Funds can be used to cover travel expenses for individual faculty and up to a team of three interdisciplinary faculty members. Upcoming application cycles are Jan. 20-Feb. 19, 2020, and Feb. 28-March 21, 2020. More information can be found here.

Emotional Health Resources
Winter can be stressful even in a normal year. Add in the challenges of working from home, isolation and COVID, and it's no surprise that many are struggling.
The University offers a number of resources to support mental and emotional health:
Employee Assistance Program: EAP provides cost-free diagnosis and referral services to all regular, full-time faculty, staff and their family members. These services are for assistance in dealing with a variety of personal and family challenges. EAP consultants provide professional, experienced guidance that can assist individuals in both work and non-work related situations.
Staff Chaplain: The staff chaplains are here to accompany staff through personal, family, work or other issues. While the chaplaincy is rooted in Holy Cross and Notre Dame’s Catholic tradition, it serves those of all faiths and those seeking faith. Our full-time staff chaplain is Fr. Jim Bracke, C.S.C. (Bracke.4@nd.edu, 574-631-9857) and our part-time staff chaplain is Fr. Tim O’Connor, C.S.C. (toconno9@nd.edu, 574-631-3178).
Wellness Coaching: Martha Vanderheyden (who presented two sessions during our Winter Term program) is a wellness coach whose services are available through the ND Wellness Center. Martha is a certified coaching professional who helps faculty and staff identify life challenges and make positive changes for health and well-being. The service is free to employees.
University Counseling Services: The ND Wellness Center offers the services of two professional counselors, psychologist Adam Dell and clinical social worker Leslie Weiss. Appointments can be made by calling the Wellness Center at 574-634-9355.

During these difficult times, you can help colleagues who find themselves in a temporary financial hardship through the Notre Dame Employee Compassion Fund. It’s easy to do through a special Give to Notre Dame Compassion Fund PayPal account, which takes users to a special account set up by United Way to accept donations that go directly to our community.

The Compassion Fund is a University Emergency Assistance program funded completely by Notre Dame faculty and staff as part of the annual United Way of St. Joseph County campaign and is administered by the Family and Children’s Center. The granting of funds will either permanently resolve the financial hardship or bridge the individual to a permanent solution to the hardship presented.
